How to Create a Chat Bot for Yahoo Messenger

Chat bots frequently invade Yahoo chat rooms via the messenger and are sometimes a pain in the neck, although they can be fun at other times. If you use programs like AdBot4 Direct, Yahoo Responder Bot 2.2 or the software created by Ondoher, a Yahoo chat bot for Yahoo messenger is quick and simple to create. The process only takes a few minutes, and in no time you can be introducing your conversational chat bot to a variety of Yahoo chat rooms.

1 Download a responding Yahoo bot program, such as Adbot4, which is an automatic responder bot that can be modified to cooperate with a variety of words and phrases.

2 Unpack the Adbot4 zip file.

3 Click the Adbot4 application and allow it to load.

4 Click the setup or creation tab to set up your bot. A small browser will prompt you to create a Yahoo Messenger, or Y!Msgr, ID and password for the bot. Click "Finish" once the ID and password are created.

5 Locate and click the conversation or dialog tab. A double paned text window will load showing command options on one side and a blank space on the other. The window with text commands will guide you through creating unique and accurate responses to general phrases, words and questions that are used in Yahoo chat rooms.

6 Click the "Finish" tab and then log in via the "Sign on" button on the bottom of the applet. The bot will be online on Yahoo Messenger. To see the bot's online status, add its screen name to your own Yahoo Messenger buddy list.

7 Choose a Yahoo chat room from the available drop-down list on the bot's applet, and click to enter the chat room. You can enter the chat room with your own ID via your Yahoo Messenger to monitor the bot's interactions with chatters and other Yahoo bots.

Display Yahoo! IDs of Friends in List in Windows 7

While using any chat messaging application, especially Yahoo! Messenger, it is quite obvious that users may make several friends and add them and their friends’ list. When the list becomes overpopulated with the friends who users have lately added and are new to the user, it becomes difficult for them to identify them. Default configuration for Yahoo! Messenger is that all the contacts which are added to the friend’s list are displayed by either their nicknames or their first and last names. Under normal circumstances this configuration serves its purpose quite well however in some cases users do not remember the nicknames or first and last names of added friends but they can only remember Yahoo IDs to identify them. When this is the case users can configure Yahoo! Messenger to display Yahoo IDs of their added friends so that it becomes easy for them to identify. As a Windows 7 user who users Yahoo! Messenger if you want to configure your application accordingly you are required to follow the steps given below:
  1. Provide appropriate credentials in Yahoo! Messenger interface to logon to the application.
  2. Click on Messenger menu and click on Preferences option.
  3. On the opened box make sure that you are on Appearancecategory from the left pane.
  4. From the right pane under For each contact, show section choose Yahoo! ID radio button to select.
  5. Click on Ok button to save the changes.

Yahoo! Messenger now censors the links you share

We've all thought it, but never dared think it could be true: what if Microsoft, Yahoo, and AOL actively monitor our instant messenger chats? What if mentions of 'bomb' and 'underage' are tracked and sent to law enforcement agencies? What if chat providers don't agree with the things we say, or the links we share, and filter or censor the content of our transmitted messages?

Well, it looks like our fears may actually have some basis in reality: Yahoo Messenger strips FilesTube links from instant messages. It doesn't tell either party that a URL has been removed from chat -- it just deletes it. Poof. FilesTube, in case you were wondering, is one of the largest file hosting meta search engines on the Web -- it indexes RapidShare, Megaupload, Mediafire, and many other 'cyberlocker' services.

It's fairly obvious why FilesTube links are being removed -- the Censor General at Yahoo is probably one of those perplexed primates who think all uses of BitTorrent are illegal -- but this situation poses a far more important question: is Yahoo censoring messages on the client side, or the server side. Does the messenger client itself maintain a list of 'blacklisted' words -- and if so, why are we not told that FilesTube links are banned? What other words and terms does Yahoo protect us from?

If the filtering is done on the server, then we have a much larger problem: Yahoo is parsing every message we send and removing content that it deems illegal. Why is chat not encrypted? What else is Yahoo censoring? Who decides what is illegal, and what isn't? Is a governmental agency involved -- a lobbying group, like the MPAA or RIAA?

If you value your privacy, and you want to chat without the Yahoo Big Brother looking over your shoulder, we suggest you use an IM client that supports encryption, such as Adium for Mac, and Pidgin with Pidgin-Encryption for Windows.

New Yahoo Messenger virus

A worm is spreading via Yahoo Instant Messenger Thursday that tricks people into downloading what they think is a photo from a friend but is instead malware that installs a backdoor on Windows systems and spreads to a victim's IM contacts.
The worm arrives via a message from a contact with the word "photo" or "photos" and a smiley face icon, along with a link to a Web site resembling a Facebook page, MySpace page, or some other page where photos might reside.

If the user clicks on the link on a Macintosh system, an executable file will be downloaded, but no further action will occur. On a Windows system, the executable will download and if the user runs the file, the computer will become infected and the malicious message will be distributed to all of the IM contacts.
"Once run, the worm copies itself to %WinDir%\infocard.exe, then it adds itself to the Windows Firewall List," modifies registry keys, and stops the Windows Updates service, according to Symantec.

Symantec detects the malware as W32.Yimfoca and said it affects Windows 98, Windows 95, Windows XP, Windows Me, Windows Vista, Windows NT, Windows Server 2003, and Windows 2000.
"It's very dangerous," Zulfikar Ramzan, technical director at Symantec Security Response, said in an interview. "When you get an IM from someone you know you're more likely to click on it."
The worm drops software onto infected computers that can be used to turn them into zombies on a botnet, he said. But, once that back door is on the compromised system anything really is possible, he added.
BitDefender said in a blog post that the "aggressive" worm is part of a family of worms that can intercept passwords and other sensitive data.

Security firm Bkis also has information on the worm, which has been spreading throughout the week.
Yahoo said in a blog post that it was aware of the issue and working to address it.
"We recently learned of an issue where some users have received spam messages from their contact list. Yahoo Messenger has quickly worked to resolve the situation," the post said. "As always, we recommend that any Yahoo Messenger user who receives a suspicious instant message with a link first IM their friend to ensure the message is legitimate before moving forward. Users should not download executable (.exe) files that are sent through Yahoo Messenger." Internet users should also keep their antivirus up to date, Yahoo recommended.

FilesTube Links Blocked in Yahoo Messenger

An 'interesting' development has sent a lot of people crying wolf. Filestube links sent via Yahoo Messenger no longer work. The link never makes to the recipient and neither participants of the conversation are notified. This could easily be seen as Yahoo censoring conversations for the media industry and it would be an order of magnitude worse than Google's censorship of search suggestions.

Then again it may be a technical error or an overzealous malware filter and accusing Yahoo of something this grave should probably take a bit more evidence.

But, since Yahoo is not saying anything and the behavior is easy to see for any Yahoo Messenger user, it's hard not to jump to conclusions.

Any Yahoo Messenger chat line that contains a direct link to FilesTube, a popular meta-search engine for file locker services, won't arrive at the destination. Using URL shorteners works though.

The intended recipient sees the familiar "'contact' is writing" notification but, after a while, this goes away and nothing happens. The message never arrives at the destination. Neither the sender or the other contact are notified or aware of the fact that the link was not sent.

This happens in the stand-alone desktop client but also in the built-in chat in Yahoo Mail. The real question is, obviously, why is this happening.

If it's a technical problem, Yahoo should have said something by now. It may very well be an issue with the service or the infrastructure and not bad intentions, but there's no way to know.

One theory is that Yahoo's malware filters, which do block links to infected pages, may be responsible for the block.

But maybe it wouldn't be that surprising if Yahoo did indeed take steps in 'curbing' copyright infringement, by censoring instant messages. If Google could be made to censor its search suggestions, there's little reason to trust web companies to stand up for your rights.

YM - The Past, The Present and The Future

Yahoo! Messenger was originally launched under the name Yahoo! Pager on March 9, 1998. While Yahoo Inc. wan't the first Internet service provider to offer free instant messaging, it is one of the Web's most popular IM services. Launched in 1999, Yahoo Messenger has more than an estimated 94 million users who use to exchange instant messages with other Yahoo, Microsoft Windows Live Messenger or Lotus Sametime users [sources: Time Warner and PC World].

Once you download Yahoo Messenger software and complete the Yahoo Messenger sign in, you'll find the service also does a lot more. You can, for example, access contacts and messages anywhere from any Web browser, communicate in any of 40 languages and share photos and large-file Web video.

Before we delve further into Yahoo Messenger, let's take a quick look at instant messaging. What exactly is it? Instant messaging allows you to carry on a conversation with someone else via your personal computer. You type in a message, which then travels in digital form over the Internet from your computer through the provider's server to the other person's computer. Within a few seconds, the message appears in an IM window on the recipient's computer screen. That person reads the message and types back a response. Small, separate IM windows on the screen allow you to carry on conversations with several different people at a time. For more information about instant messaging, check out How Instant Messaging Works.

When e-mail contact isn't fast or convenient enough, Internet users turn to IM. Many teens use IM daily to talk to five or six friends at a time while simultaneously listening to music, doing homework and talking on their cell phone.

Teens aren't the only group found IM handy. This communications tool also works for business colleagues checking details with sales reps on the road, friends trying to find a time to talk at length and mobile phone users who need to check in with the office or contact each other. The number of IM users worldwide was estimated at 461 million in 2007 and is expected to reach 711 million by 2011, according to the Radicati Group, a market research firm specializing in messaging and collaboration technologies.
